MVP
Mitral Valve Prolapse Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP) is a type of heart disorder occurring when the valve between your heart’s left upper chamber and the left lower chamber does not close properly. When the left ventricle contracts, the valve’s leaflets bulge, or prolapse, upward or back into the atrium. MVP can lead to blood leaking backward into the atrium which is called mitral valve regurgitation.
Symptoms may include:
- a racing or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
- dizziness, lightheadedness
- difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, often when lying flat or during physical exertion
- fatigue
- chest pain that is not associated with heart attack or coronary artery disease
Although most patients never have serious problems, complications may include
- mitral valve regurgitation
- heart valve infection
- heart rhythm problems (arrhythmia)
