NCS

NCS- Neurocardiogenic Syncope also known as vasovagal syncope, neurally mediated syncope, vasodepressor or reflex mediated syncope.

Syncope is a temporary loss of consciousness also called “fainting” or ”passing out.” Usually syncope is related to inadequate amounts of blood replenishing the brain with oxygen.

Syncope often occurs after a series of symptoms or warning signs, letting the person know he or she is about to faint but this is not always the case. Most often, if the person sits or lies down, these symptoms will be supressed and there will be no syncopal episode. Syncope usually occurs while the person is standing, occasionally sitting, and rarely lying down.

Symptoms may include but are not limited to:

  • lightheadedness
  • dizziness
  • paleness or flushing
  • clamminess or sweating
  • feelings of warmth or coldness
  • nausea (rarely vomiting)
  • weakness
  • visual disturbances such as tunnel vision, gray outs, and seeing spots
  • vertigo
  • difficulty speaking clearly or coherently
  • tremors
  • yawning
  • irregular hear beats (such as fast heart rate or palpitations)
  • eventual loss of consciousness

*** In extremely rare cases death can be a result, especially if the person is not allowed to lie down. If you see someone faint, do not move the person unless they would be in other wise more serious danger (i.e. the person fainted walking across a busy intersection) because the person may have hurt their head, neck, or spine. Moving the person could cause further damage. It is not necessary to slap the person’s face, pour water on them, or anything of that nature. Usually the person will wake up on their own within a few seconds to a minute. If not then it should be considered an emergency. ***
